Those with long memories will remember the time when Milord Moylan, our homegrown aristocrat, decided the area would be better off without Sloane Square.
Milord's problem was that he was raised in Brum...not a place of great beauty.
Anyway, the Dame wanders..the point of this story is to connect the Sloane Square battle with the current one over M&S in King's Rd.
Moylan's crude plan was thwarted by James and Margaret Thompson.
They said damage the Square and we will stand as Independents.
It was this that caused the awful Pooter Cockell to back off in panic.
But not only the Thompsons deserve praise.
Two councillors also had the courage to side with residents.
Step forward Tim Coleridge and Victoria Borwick!
So, why did the Leader of the Council, Elizabeth Campbell bar Borwick from standing as a Conservative councillor?
Some say because she felt threatened by Victoria.
That is doubtless true. But another plausible reason is that like Julie Mills Borwick is pro-resident.
Had she been on the Planning Committee she would have listened to residents and voted against this travesty of good taste.
Dear Dame,
ReplyDeleteI think you mean Victoria "Borwick," not Victoria "Buchan" You introduce Victoria as "Buchan" and refer to her as "Borwick" thereafter.
Pleased to hear you mention Julie Mills. Julie Mills was one of the few decent Councillors ever elected to the Council. Regardless of party politics, she genuinely cared about people, was well intentioned, with a stronge sense of right and wrong; qualities that other Councillors would do well to match. I believe she used to serve as a magistrate too.
I hope Julie is enjoying life and keeping well.
Borwick and Mills both superb councillors who listened to residents and was on their side. Not only that biut they were intelligent, considerate, fair and lovely. MORE such is what is needed, not those more loyal to their political party than to grassroots residents. At Councillor level listening and interacting with the day to day concerns of the local reisidents is good for all the local political parties.
ReplyDeleteJulie Mills used to be KCFC chair & axed a lot of councillors before the 2018 locals. If only she could come back to finish the work
ReplyDelete.
Current Councillor Claire Simmonds is a superb example of a listening pro active Councillor who puts residents first.
ReplyDeleteThank you Claire...if you say so!!
DeleteIncorrect, the comment is from a resident happy to stand up and declare that Councillor Simmonds shows genuine support and care to residents, and is most appreciated it is too.
DeleteClaire Simmonds was a nasty, vicious middle- class Stalinist creature of Dent Coad
Delete@06:27 your horrible personal opinion based accusations are not our experience of Councillor Simmonds at all. It’s Shocking to read such nastiness.
DeleteCllr Simmons at least has excellent command of the English language and
Deleteseems to know what she is doing, which is more than can be said for most of the other "councillors"(what a joke) on her side.
Simmons stands out as being half competent among the Labour side because most of the others haven't the foggiest of how to put questions or how the council works. There are at least 2 of them who can barely speak English.
DeleteSimmons is just an aerated bonehead. A posho trustafarian who know nothing but taking the dollar from Mummy and Daddy .
Delete@20:37 your nasty spiteful pubic personal opinions about someone you’ve probably never met are disgusting and should be removed.
DeleteWell, ask the Dame to remove them
Delete@15:10 if you are the author responsible for those odious comments, please be kind enough to remove them.
Delete@ 11:50 People are allowed to have differences of opinion you know
DeleteNot in the Stalinist clique of 17:38
DeleteSpiteful, untrue defamatory comments about someone you’ve probably never met, one councillor who actually stands up for the residents interests unlike KTS et al.
DeleteOh, give it a rest: defamatory? Don't spout rubbish
DeleteIt might do Cllr Simmonds and her supporters some good to grow a thicker skin
DeleteThis whole gaggle of garbage are of utterly no use to anyone. The Borwick woman especially. A pathetic MP and as for her replacements, Dent Coad and Buchan - lock 'em up.
ReplyDeleteDent Coad was very loyal to the TMO and not loyal to Council tenants - she knew what was good for the orders beneath her- more's the pity.
ReplyDeleteShe was unconditionally loyal to Corbyn. Shame on her for not being unconditionally loyal to Council tenants.
I agree. Emma was definitely Corbyn's woman. Corbyn came first, everything else was relegated to the back seat.
DeleteIt came unequivocally straight from the horse's mouth when Emma said, "My Socialism is Corbyn's Socialism." She could not define Socialism for herself.
Corbyn's woman is a bad loser. When she lost in 2019, she took it very hard. Her pride was hurt and she was totally humiliated standing on that platform at the Town Hall with the victor. It's tough for a Marxist when no one wants you anymore. She's setting herself up for more of the same next year. Why does she do it?
DeleteI never knew that EDC said My socialism is Corbyn's socialism.
DeleteAre "Hamas her friends?"
I am certain that Joe Powell and Felicity Buchan MP are both prepared to denounce Hamas and its terrorism. Emma needs to tell the people of Kensington her position on Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Hamas's terror in Israel. Jeremy Corbyn MP refused to condemn Hamas and is an apologist for Putin.
DeleteKensington's working, middle and upper classes do not need an MP that refuses to tell us her position on these matters.
Kensingtonians will inevitably draw their own conclusions from EDC's statement that her "socialism is Corbyn's socialism."
No you're wrong. EDC is all about herself & only herself.
DeleteAn emotionally immature, vile selfish, scheming, untrustworthy, spiteful narcissistic bully of a woman. Anyone who get to know her well & has ever had to work closely with her soon finds out what an unpleasant piece of work she is. Thank heavens she'll never be Kensington MP ever again.
You're right, you know. 12.53
DeleteSo where does that dreadful woman stand on foreign policy??
DeleteWith Hamas and Putin??
She stands shoulder to shoulder with Jeremy Corbyn MP.
At this point who cares what EDC thinks about Foreign Policy ? ( Never her strong point ). The only thing of relevance about her nowadays is How many votes is her ego going to reduce Joe Powell's majority by ?
DeletePoint taken 15.58.
DeleteThe reason I ask about where EDC stands on foreign policy is that she has declared her socialism as being in point with Corbyn's socialism. As Corbyn supports Putin and refuses to denounce Hamas, if Emma chooses not to tell us what she thinks about terrorist groups and despotic leaders, we can make sure that Kensington voters knows that she in on message with Corbyn about Hamas. That would be enough to cost EDC the election in Kensington.
Very clever. So if Emma Dent Coad doesn't break ranks with Corbyn, she will be shafted by Kensington voters who will not vote for her if she is exposed as a Hamas sympathiser. This is crunch time for Corbyn's woman.
DeleteIt was stupid for EDC to brand her socialism as Corbyn's socialism. A politically astute person would not have scored an open goal like that. Corbyn, in the best Trotskyite tradition, wants a World Socialist Order. Therefore, every sinew of Corbyn's socialism is tied up with the creation of the World Socialist Order which is why he speaks out on the Middle East conflict. His fondness for Hamas and his refusal to denounce them creates a problem for dear Emma who has tied her socialism up with Jeremy Corbyn.
DeleteWe all know that Emma is not up on foreign policy and the World Socialist Order.
Looks like there's sympathy for the terrorists on the twitter account for councillor Mona Ahmed.
DeleteIf Dent Coad insists on obsequiously fawning, flattering and taking the same line as Corbyn on HAMAS and PUTIN, her fate will be sealed until the General Election by every good Hornet who will let Kensington know her position on a terrorist group who has taken hostages and is reported to be beheading people.
DeleteWhat sane person, for example a Grenfell Survivor, would vote for Dent Coad to enter those hallowed portals of the Commons ever again or her want her bottom to grace Connolly's green leather benches.
Don't worry that odious woman will be shafted at the GE. She's not up to much - cocking a snook refusing to tell us her views about Hamas and Putin. She always good for laugh and the next twelve months will leave her feeling very vulnerable and insecure.
DeleteIf EDC wants us to vote for her, we are entitled to know her views on these topical foreign policy issues. Perhaps, she needs Jeremy Corbyn's permission before she speaks just so she does not upset him. She knows how irascible he is.
DeleteHas the Dame visited Sloane Square recently ? Its just a rather posh and inaccessible traffic island. Its encouraging that the Council has recently started to try to use the central area with popup restaurants etc . But the whole place is still unpleasantly polluted & noisy. Moylan's idea or restoring a crossroad at Sloane Square with large 'build outs' from the underground station/ Royal Court and from Peter Jones/Tiffannys had many advantages .
ReplyDeleteIt would have made the approach to the Tube station infinitely safer (Just like the newish plaza at South Kensington Station). The Chelsea War Memorial would be approachable and given some dignity . On the opposite side, a build out from Peter Jones would provide a suitable setting for the rather lovely fountain which currently fails to compete with the noise of traffic.
With a crossroads controlled by traffic lights vehicles could be held on the approach roads until it was their turn to cross what is now the square. Buses & traffic would actually have a much shorter distances to traverse the square area and would therefore cause less pollution and noise. The changes required would actually be very few & a couple of the magnificent trees could easily be shifted a short distance out of the way using a socking great crane ( If Dizzy Campbell felt more secure and had a sense of humour she could even invite the Dame herself to manoeuvre the crane )
Such a pity that the Council allowed itself to be bullied by the ghastly Thompsons who appear to have a veto on any innovation in RBK
If the Dame is in town next time the Borough's Remembrance ceremony is held in Sloane Square perhaps she could see for herself how the Moylan Scheme would have greatly increased the amount of usable/accessible space in the squares and made it serve residents as well as motorists
It is good to see Milord Moylan, despite his protestations to the contrary, reads the Dame. Thousands of residents protested about Moylan's scheme. Enough said!
Delete23.28 is not Lord Moylan - just a sensible resident who is able to make their own mind up about planning & other matters . ( Indeed Moylan's proposals for Sloane Square & his recent comment that " the longer Sunak's government staggers on , the greater will be the size of the Labour majority" are the only matters on which this resident agrees with his Lordship.
DeleteWhether His Lordship is right as far as the 'staggering' is concerned he only makes the comment because he is a creature of the amoral Johnson. Moylan has always lusted after a peerage and that is the gift his friend bestowed on him. As to your views on SS....you are out of step with the thousands who said NO. I suppose you like the M&S plan!
DeleteWrong. I don't know anyone who has a good word to say for the M& S plan. It is but the latest example of the Council ( and especially the Planning Department) putting the interests of developers before those of residents - but crying crocodile tears whilst doing so .Why do residents continue to elect Conservative Councillors who do not work for or listen to residents ?
DeleteCllr Ahmed states she is a forensic NHS psychiatrist. If she is her X tweet is hardly forensic. She claims there is greater sympathy for Israeli deaths than those of people from Palestine. She ignores two facts: the first is that had Hamas not cold bloodedly murdered civilians the Israelis would not have needed to react as they did. She then ignores the murder of babies as if they are collateral damage. What a vile person
