If you walk past the Odeon today you certainly see a distressing sight.
Our much-loved Odeon looks battered and bruised as it is readied to be developed into yet another stack of multi-million pound flats for shady owners from countries you would not want your gap year children sending postcards from.
Democracy has gone very wrong in the Royal Borough when nearly 30,000 residents, objecting to the scheme, are ignored.
But can there be hope for this magnificent Art Deco cinema with a long and proud cinematic history?
It was, after all, Hitchcock's favourite cinema.

It's a big ambition, but the Dame's theatrical friends tell her that there is a huge appetite for theatres that can be adapted and flexibly configured to provide first class rehearsal space.

We need more buildings, serving not just our Borough, but the wider national and international film and theatre community.
These are areas where the British excel in.
Interestingly, in November, the Design Museum opens in the old Commonwealth building.
If the ambitions for the Odeon are fulfilled we could see a vibrant 'Creative Quarter' mirroring the 'Museum Quarter'

Please support our application for the building to become an asset of community value by signing the petition. We need as many supporters as possible

have done so and would expect all of you to do the same. Get rid of multi-million £ flats.
DeleteThis is an opportune moment for the council to act in support of the community.
ReplyDeleteDon't expect the council to do anything that doesn't personally suit them. Look at their total disregard for the CR2 responses.
ReplyDeleteDame, why you no blog?
ReplyDeleteWould you mind awfully running that one past the dear old Dame again?
DeleteMost bizarre....
and can we please have more signings of the petition?
DeleteCouncil should take notice what has happened over Hillsborough & Orgreave; that everyone is accountable to the law no matter who they are.
ReplyDeleteWell they're not, are they? 30 years on many of the guilty are dead having wallowed happily in their pensions, and no one is being pursued. The law doesn't matter to our Masters and their minions.
ReplyDeleteThere are are lots of beaters out there and enough snakes to drive out of the grass.
