BE CAREFUL WHO LEADS YOU

The dictate that one 'not speak ill of the dead' maybe appropriate for private individuals, but not influential public figures like the late leader of RBK&C, Sir Nicholas Freeman

As we consider future leaders let us consider past leaders….
One in particular, Nicholas Freeman, was as Wilkipedia says, “ a controversial figure”: a polite way of saying a very nasty piece of work…a bully and a vandal and who, in the climate of today, might have ended up in prison for the very same reasons that Jimmy Savile has been pilloried. How has the Dame found out? Through a retired and very senior Scotland Yard detective......
SMASHED TO PIECES BY VANDALISTIC LEADER
This was a man sanctified by the council, yet who carried out the most appalling piece of vandalism.
Without consulting colleagues Freeman, in 1982, ordered the overnight destruction of the wonderful Victorian Italianate Town Hall hours before it was due to be given Listed Status.
With cynical disregard he ordered the beautiful façade to be smashed to pieces.
The Royal Fine Art Commission condemned the action as
"official vandalism... decided upon covertly, implemented without warning and timed deliberately to thwart known opposition".
Freeman was particularly criticised for failing to find an alternative use for the building. He survived the storm, doubtless helped by the fact that he dominated the council to a degree unusual among municipal leaders, but there was little comfort for the ratepayers: the cost of the ugly new town hall far exceeded his original estimates!

  2. Freeman's private life was an open secret in the Town Hall. Mercifully times have moved on and tortured individuals can now live their lives openly and without the need for secrecy and subterfuge. This also means that repressed mavericks no longer need to lead a bizarre existence after hours in the Town hall

    1. This you have completely wrong. This has NOTHING to do with him being gay.
Gays are not interested in under age boys. In fact, it was two gays who provided the emails sent by Phelps, which led to his banishment. No, Freeman had a problem with very young boys. Why did they provide this to the Dame's friends? Because they were disgusted.
This is a scandal hit council: we need no more

  3. Don't forget ex-Councillor Cox's part in this act of vandalism.

    1. Please tell us! More dirt. Cllr Cox was one of the dreadful Councillors (Chairman of Scrutiny) who rode roughshod over residents to achieve his Master's wish for a revamped and wasteful Holland Park School. A vile little reptile

Cllr Cox is a fine upstanding chap with a family of distinguished Naval tradition. He takes himself and his family history very seriously and has made a point of filling the walls of his home office with pictures of distant relatives in Naval Uniform. He loves to invite other Councillors into his den

After one particularly riotous meeting to discuss plans for Holland Park School, packed with outraged residents, Cllr Cox was heard to whisper to a fellow Councillor "Of course all of this protest is a waste of time and will be ignored". An attitude that was followed shortly after by a comment from Cllr Weale (Cabinet for Education) that "our job is to listen but not to hear".

  4. The Dame is right to rake up this dirty linen and fire a warning shot across the bows of the current Leadership Election in K&C. The Administration could be in mortal danger.

  5. There will be no "whispers" from Cllr Moylan after his election as Leader. What you see is what you get. Opposition just gets smashed in full frontal combat. This is the panzer democrat.

    1. Silly Owl. The panzers never won a war. As Margaret calmly told a colleague after a football defeat by the Germans. "They may have beaten us at football but we beat them twice at their national sport"

Margaret and James Thomson licked the bus drivers son when he dared to disturb the established order in Sloane Square

  6. The repeated references to "the bus driver's son" are both offensive and irrelevant. It's not his father's profession that makes Cllr Moylan unacceptable, it's his deeply flawed personality.

    1. I agree: it's stupid...whether he was a duke or dustman's son it would not matter...he has a bad character.

  7. The choice of candidates may not be ideal however of the three the only one who has the experience and has by far the safest pair of hands is Nick Paget-Brown. The other two candidates are both suspect, firstly Rock has no experience and is a hopelessly inexperienced opportunist and Daniel Moylan has far too many enemies which will make his chances of bringing real unity to the Council Chamber impossible. I might add that Daniel moylan has himself to blame for treating people without the respect they deserve. So it is Nick for me.

  8. I remember the Town Hall demolition outrage, the fine building replaced by a concrete box of zero architectural interest. The current Conservative claque will doubtless clap and dance for joy as another K&C landmark of significant interest, Earls Court, is flattened to make way for a deeply flawed scheme- demolishing with it, the livelihoods of the SW5 hotels and businesses that rely so heavily on trade from its exhibitors/visitors.
