THE CYCLE GRID AND YOU

The Dame has suggested that the Louisiana based candidate for Royal Hospital ward, Andrew Rinker, get on his bike and take himself and his carpet bag back to New Orleans.
He is not wanted here and from what she hears won't be getting an easy ride.

Anyway, being on the subject of bikes the Dame draws attention to Tfl's cycle grid and how they might affect the Borough.
Residents should take a look here cycle routes and talk to their ward councillor if at all concerned.

  1. The announcement is timely, as Boris has been getting in the neck about cycle safety for weeks, but the proposals are far from impressive. Some of the routes seem rather odd and it certainly doesn't look like London is about to be transported to the Netherlands as far as cycle safety is concerned.

    1. This bicycle thing is something that only a prick like Johnson can get excited about. He should concentrate instead on getting his mass transport system right ie the tube and the bus

  2. London, and London weather, is not made for cyclists. And each of the Boris bikes is costing the tax payer £10,000 every year. The Mayor is profligate and does not have the first clue about economics and how to construct a business plan. The whole thing is a joke. A very bad joke. And the cyclists are a menace. They ride the wrong way up one way streets, they ride on the pavements, they get in the way of HGV lorries. Society has worked for 150 years to perfect car transport and now we are trying to reverse history. Only an idiot like Boris could be the champion of such stupidity.

If people want to cycle to work then they should go and live in Peking

    1. The weather isn't really a problem. If you think otherwise I suggest a quick trip across the channel to Holland. If you ever thought London was cold and damp you're in for an unpleasant surprise when stood in the cycle lane next to a canal in the middle of February.

The point about the cost of the bike scheme is noted. It is expensive and poor value for money. Even more so when the Mayor's office are clearly incapable of negotiating a sponsorship deal without getting taken to the cleaners by some *ankers. But this is only tangentially related to the Mayor's bike scheme. It is predominantly about providing safe routes for cyclists, and particularly the vast number who actually own their own bikes and wouldn't be seen dead in one of the Mayor's blue monstrosities.

I do agree however that, as suggested above, the Mayor should concentrate on the long overdue improvements to the mass transport system (tube, bus etc) and discouraging the use of the car, particularly for short journeys. Unfortunately many of the improvements the capital's mass transport system needs are expensive, so expensive they are arguably beyond the Mayor's means, and we end up with a lot of "tinkering round the edges".

  3. Only an oaf like Boris wants to crap all over London by spoiling backwaters like Lexham Gdns with his ludicrous bikes. Riders get run over (rightly) in High Streets so now the idiot wants to route the menaces via quiet residential areas. What a prat

    1. To be fair the borough's quiet residential areas are hardly going to be harmed by a few cyclists. And it might even stop some of our less considerate residents driving down them at 50mph in their penis extensions!

  4. We are currently suffering the stormiest winter for 40 years - due to climate change. As a society, we must radically change our habits. We have to reduce motor traffic before the Thames Barrier fails and Chelsea floods.

At a public meeting I once heard an old Guards officer type demand the Council ban cyclists and motor cyclists from Cheney Walk.Yet when his house floods, a pleb fireman will rescue the old gentleman.

The lower orders are entitled to freedom of movement. It's the private cars that are unnecessary in Central London. They cause huge damage. Alternatives include car clubs and bikes. Cyclists are entitled to safety.

Having said that; if true - I'm appalled that Boris bikes costs taxpayers £10,000pa each.

    1. The bikes do not cost £10k each. It is the running costs of the whole enterprise - staff, vans to transport the bikes back to base, maintenance etc. Its what the accounts say. Dreadful business cock up. In Paris they make money and in other Cities they break even. This guy is not a businessman.

    2. Of course he's not a businessman. He's an opportunistic career politician with a distinct lack of conviction and a sideline in shagging.

    3. Not Leadership material

    4. Sadly the Tory party has sunk to new intellectual lows. They first elected Cameron as party leader and now that he's failed to secure a Tory majority in parliament some want to replace him with Boris. There's definitely a distinct lack of leadership material there, but it's clearly not confined to "call me Dave" and the blonde lothario.

  5. Us plebs have access to the most unbelievable teleportation technology don't you know? If doesn't matter that a fireman has to live two dozen miles from his place of work, can't use his bike and has nowhere to park his car. One quick word to Scottie and he'll be attending to that old guardsman in no time. Just another example of town planning Tory style.
