Someone closely involved with saving Sutton Estate said,
"there's so much more to knocking down estates than just bricks and planning".
Had the community of Sutton Estate not come together the community would have evaporated in a cloud of brick dust.
One of Sutton's innovative groups is the Sunken Garden Club and rather than the Dame try to explain what happened please take a few moments to click on THE YELLOW BALLOON and see the extraordinary things that can happen when residents work together for the common good.
In 1953 the film was X rated: today, it would be U....our changing times....
This is fantastic. This is what residents want to be able to enjoy the Communities they live in , instead.of endless battles with property speculators who want to destroy their ways of life.
ReplyDeleteI went along with my eldery neighbour who hasn't really been anywhere since lockdown . Oh the joy on her face, being able to sit in the middle of the previously threatened Community and watching it flourish . I swear she dropped 30 years after watching it , she was so animated. She said it made her feel 'young again ' . Its people that make these estate's , its these people that took the bombing in '41 , and it these people that make London one of the best Cities in the World . Well done to all involved.
ReplyDeleteWe are so lucky that our Community was not destroyed . Feel so glad that William Sutton left this great legacy.
ReplyDeleteFilm was Fab . I felt like a kid going to the Cinema - minus Ice Creams at the Interval
ReplyDeleteIt felt like we got our Estate back. Why can't they just have treated us like that in the first place ! Anyhow - quite a good Movie really .
