I am elderly and self-isolating so I have plenty of time to ponder on life and human nature. When I was younger rich people in local government rarely expected any form of remuneration: they were driven by public service.
It seems different these days looking at our very comfortably off 'leadership team'.
Most of our 'leaders' never need to worry about the everyday burdens facing residents like mortgages, business rates, council tax, school fees etc
So, at times like this why won't they show solidarity with the very people who struggle to fund their allowances and refuse to accept their allowance?
Looking at the list the only one who seems to claim nothing is Cllr Kim Taylor-Smith.

On the left is our mayor, Cllr Pascall.
He and his wife have taken massive amounts from the council in allowances despite him being a rich man.

ReplyDeleteMayor Pascall is asset rich with three top class properties in the Royal Borough which he rents out. Cllr Mrs Pascall is from a political family and likes to keep up the tradition. Between them they have huge middle class aspirations and three boys at top schools with fees of £250k every year. Result? A huge income gap which their £70k allowances from Hornton Street helps to fund.
DeleteThe Hornton Street fund also allows the family to drive around the Borough in a blacked out camper van. Very cool.

ReplyDeleteMany years ago I served on Somerset County Council. The chairman/leader was a man called George Wyndham.
ReplyDeleteWyndham was a man of such exceptional quality that despite being a Tory he had had cross party support.
George Wyndham would turn in his grave to think that Conservative council leaders would dare pay themselves such sky high allowances. I suppose times change and the ethics of the Wyndham's of this world are but distant memories.
The Wyndhams of this world hark back to the days when public service at a local government level were part of the job of being a landowner.

Our local Government is in the hands of the wrong people - self interested, grasping,and greedy types. Lets hope that the new intake of younger Councillors will quickly rise and give us a Leadership that is motivated by public service and not self interest and puffing
