From the well-heeled watering holes of Notting Hill to the slurred but cut-glass accents of those stumbling home down King’s Road, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has long had a reputation for its hard-partying Sloanes — one bright wag even thought to make a TV show about them.
Even so, The Londoner was surprised when the Spectator’s Mr Steerpike drew our attention to the self-stereotyping wit of the council’s new drink-awareness poster and social media campaign.Roadhug.org, which launched last month, aims to reduce the number of alcohol-related pedestrian accidents and features inebriated traffic-sign stick figures in white ties and pearls.
Beam, the London design company behind the campaign, tells me its brief was to send a message to “a targeted audience — people who are maybe having a few too many drinks. We wanted to bring the point across with humour, to make people smile without being too jokey, because it’s a serious issue — people are getting killed.”
Did they worry at any point that the Henrys and Cressidas of west London might be offended by the implication that they’re debauched? “We tried to make sure we didn’t come across as being too sarcastic about it,” the spokesman said. “It’s important for Kensington and Chelsea to be respectful.”
The Londoner attempted to talk to Kensington and Chelsea council about its thinking behind the campaign but, oddly enough, no one seemed to want to take the credit for it.
RBKC being respectful? They don't know the meaning of the word.
