LGA Conservatives hit back
at Shapps in councillors' pensions row
Sir Merrick (aka Pooter Cockell) chair of the Local Government
Association (LGA) and Conservative group leader Cllr Gary Porter launched a vehement attack against
remarks made earlier by Conservative Party chairman Grant Shapps and local
government minister Brandon Lewis. Both have a vested interest in continuing to live off the taxpayer and don't want the likes of Shapps and Lewis getting in their way.

Shapps,served as
DCLG housing minister until last summer’s reshuffle, likened councillors to Boy
Scouts in undertaking their civic role, when speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today
programme. Mr Shapps was talking in reaction to the findings of the Commons CLG
committee into broadening participation at local level, which urged independent
local bodies should set councillor allowances.
In response, leader of
Kensington & Chelsea RBC Sir Merrick Cockell, told the LGA’s executive
meeting on 10 January ministers couldn't have it both ways in wanting more
hands-on town hall leaders and fewer high-paid chief executives on the one
hand, and a return to part-time oversight on the other.
The chances of Pooter getting his peerage seem to be fast evaporating!

ReplyDeleteAs we all know the coalition is desperately trying to bring public sector expenditure under control and making appropriate cuts where possible and yet it seems to me that the government does not have the co-operation of the likes of Sir Merrick and others, who are happy to continue feathering their beds. I have thought for along time that there are far too many tiers of government in this country. Why we have to have Whitehall, then City Hall (Boris), Quangos like the LGA (Sir Merrick), Local Councils such as RBK&C and so it goes on. The country is completely top heavy and Government needs to realise that these unproductive, hugely expensive and in truth unnecessary tiers should be severely cut. I would start by following Mrs Thatchers footsteps and close City Hall.
