Cllr Marshall-when not on global polo expeditions, is supposed to be fighting for residents of Brompton Ward....but whose side is he REALLY on?
Is he friend-or foe-of those he is paid to represent? Or has he aligned himself with the greedy commercial interests of TfL.....
Residents in South Kensington are increasingly puzzled by Quent's rabid defence of TfL's hideous development plans for their beloved architectural gem of an underground station.

Some are thinking the very thinkable...Could Quent's gutless behaviour have all to do with a close council colleague. TfL's £130,000 a year deputy chairman, is none other than the Great Architect, RBKC Cllr Danny Moylan. And Danny is a friend and colleague of Quentin......
TfL want to build this monstrous office block over the historic and universally admired historic Underground station. They say unless they are given permission to develop the site there will be no money available to build the step-free access. Now this is where it all gets very mysterious...
TfL have gone out for just one quote. Normally, one would have expected competitive tendering. But it seems as if only one £19 million quote is traceable! It looks suspiciously as if someone is manipulating public opinion by telling residents-No Development: No Step Free Access. But even more mysterious is the fact that TfL has already received the money for the access, but has spent it elsewhere and refuses to say where
Come on Quent, you may be terrified of Daniel Moylan but you have a duty to speak up for residents and tell TfL to stop bullying us.

You don't seriously think that Cllr Marshall is going to stand up to Cllr Moylan? Please, let's come back to reality here. The other representatives for Brompton ward are Cllr Mosley and Cllr Lady Ritchie. I don't think that any of these people would stand up to Moylan, so it looks like residents of Brompton ward are out of luck. If Moylan wants it, he will bully and squash any Tory Councillor who tries to get in his way.

I thought there was something fishy ~ at a meeting recently the Cllrs spent their time hectoring the residents on why they should accept this ugly blight ~ now I know why ~ google Cllr Moylan and as well as working for TfL he was head of planning ~ judge and jury. After recent events I would have thought RBKC would have got their house in order need to get their act in order, we need real Cllrs not yes men with famnous grandparents ~ good work residents in exposing this.
ReplyDeleteThis building looks terrible and out of proportion. South Kensington is one of the best tube stations at teh moment because it feels open and unopressive. All tourists visiting London will go through it so it should be an architectural gem - not a project designed to squeeze teh most amount of money out for the benefit of others - the Cllrs should get a grip and take a course in aesthetics.

ReplyDeleteWhere would the money go to? I bet it would not help local residents or help improve the local area. We will have to suffer years of building work, get an ugly skyscrapper in place of an open space and the cash will go elsewhere - why do Cllrs Marshall and Mosely support this piece of brutalist archetecture?
ReplyDeleteCllrs Mosely and Marshal do not I believe even live in the area (Chelsea and North Kensington?) and are more concerned about climbing the greacy pole - Marshall wants to be an MP and Mosely works for an MP in Cumbria and also probably wants to be one - they will not wish to upset their prospects by sticking up for the residents against their friends in City Hall. Professional MPs are bad enough - professional career Cllrs takes the mick -
ReplyDeleteA few years ago now I suggested to Merrick that the area above the rail lines and east of South Ken station towards Thurloe Square could have been made into a wonderful garden to complement the Exhibition Road redevelopment.The last thing the residents want is an office block, surely. Just look at the the hideous office block next to Sloane Square underground station. I also have absolutely no confidence at all in Clr Quentin Marshall;woefully inexperienced
ReplyDeleteI see Boris and Ken will be doing Q/A on the Guardian - perhaps we should ask them if they support this monstorous plan - there must be alot of votes in it and TfL is the Mayor's remit - my guess is Boris has not been told by his Tory RBKC friends there is a problem here and so might be helpful in slapping them down?

Draycott - a garden would be wonderful and in line with the Mayor's green initiatives - perhaps we could as an alternative propose a polo ground (or a Reichsparteitagsgelände) - they might be more appealing to the Cllrs

Which ward is South Kensington station in? I can't work out if it's Brompton, Courtfield or Queens Gate.

I think people from all wards will use the station including DM's own constituents... I think if Mosely is serious about being an MP he needs to get some backbone and make a stand on an issue - I doubt being a yesman would impress a local association.....
ReplyDeleteActually, I think Cllr Louis Mosely will go far - despite the lack of a chin, gut or spine he is a metropolitan Etonian with famous relatives. That will propel him into 'Dave's' adress book and possibly the House of Commons - like the OE MP he works for - but it would be better if he stood up for his constituents - as he will have to explain himself someday -

Godfrey - I agree but given that most people in RBKC(me included) are centre-right conservatives and vote for Conservatives without thinking about the local issues, how can we get rid of these clowns? The current set up lets them take the people for granted with terrible results? I think we need a centre-right or independent challengers who can run a good campaign. Perhaps a league of residents associations? There was a time (a better time) when there were no political parties at a local level.
ReplyDeleteIf the Dame "wants to know what the hell is going on" in South Kensington and whether Cllr Quentin Marshall is, or is not, supporting the majority of local residents in opposing TfL's outline development proposals for the tube station why did she not contact the Brompton Association which has campaigned to save the station from overdevelopment since 2004 - and got it listed as a historic building - before launching into print? Our three Ward Councillors - including Cllr Marshall - have made it clear they are opposed to the size of the proposed development; that they do not accept the premise that a large development is required in order to fund step free access; that TfL's current proposals fail to safeguard the retail units in Thurloe Street and around the the bullnose and that small shops contribute to the character of the Conservation Area. We, and other local residents associations, are enormously grateful to Cllr Marshall for his support. TfL need to recognise that turning South Kensington into another Fulham Broadway is no way to treat one of the most historic tube stations on the network.

Sophie, I think he has been telling different things to different people - he certainly did not sound very opposed when I heard him - more an apologist. Then again I guess they can let him say he is a little concerned as that will not change anything - they all want it to help DM. Personally if they knock a floor off to say they listened it will still be terrible -

ReplyDeletewell as always, the devil is in detail. I agree with Sophie that Cllr Marshall may oppose the largest proposed development. However, Cllr Marhall should be opposing any development of the SK station – particularly those justified on teh spurious grounds of raising funds for step free access. TfL is under legal obligation to provide step free access and has received funding .... which was then spent on something ... but rather difficult to say exacly on what. In any event, it is up to TfL to find the money to build the step free access. Cllr Marchall should make it clear to the TfL that any development of SK station should not be justified in terms of step free access but on its architectural merit (or lack of).
ReplyDeleteAs some have already suggested, it is an old and favourite game of Cllrs to 'agree with the concerns' of the residents. They then go to meetings and sound oh so helpful and on the side of the residents.
ReplyDeleteTHEN, when the scheme is 'explained', they say, thank you, that's put my concerns to rest, on balance now I think I will have to agree it (fake tortured expression).
Either that, or they have proposed the unthinkable deliberately, so that when an ever-so-slightly modified scheme emerges, they claim victory and agree that.
It's all a CON.

The Cllrs ”Do not accept the premise that a large development is required” for an escalator ~ what size is not large? Looks like they are justifying development to install something TfL should do anyway? I don't see the need for any development.

Well, judging by all the comments BA labours under the illusion that Cllr Marshall and his fellow councillors are right behind residents in opposing this, and ANY other development, impacting upon the station. The Dame says she scents the whiff of naivety here
ReplyDeleteThanks for highlighting this issue. TfL's plans for visual blight are atrocious. There should be NO development both large or very large, it will darken an open space and cause horrible disruption. TfL had set aside £50m for adding step free access, now because they have become greedy they have cancelled them. Without this development we would already have the escalators - no one should use the provision of lifts to justify building officeblocks. Read this:

ReplyDeleteThis company will sell you an escalator for $16,000 - so really do not understand why TfL believe it could cost £50m!!!!!! I think they have inflated the cost of the step free acess to push through the development.
