Felicity Buchan needs to launch a meeting to get constituents' views on the three taxes that really hit them hard in the solar plexus.
The chief executive of Frasers Group described Business Rates as a disaster.
Michael Murray said rent bills were now equal to the rates the group pays for the buildings, adding: “It makes it almost unviable. You’re almost paying rent twice.”
Another tax you pay twice is Inheritance Tax: few other constituencies are so hard hit by this tax as Kensington.
Finally, Stamp Duty...at historically high levels it is a tax that freezes the property market blocking people's opportunities to move up or down.
In positioning these meetings as feedback opportunities Felicity won't breach the ministerial code but she can show constituents she cares about the pain these taxes cause constituents.
Labour has already said it will deal with the burden of business rates. We now need a similar commitment on all three taxes.
If you believe for one moment that Labour will do anything to reduce the excessive burden of business rates then you are credulous beyond belief. They might waffle on about it a bit, but they won't actually do anything.
ReplyDeleteAnyone calling for the abolition or weakening of Inheritance Tax or Stamp Duty must tell us how the loss of revenue will be compensated for by the exchequer. Nobody likes paying taxes but most of us accept them as a necessary evil
ReplyDeleteThat's easy: cutting the vast waste this government generates billions wasted on HS2; billions wasted during the pandemic;billions wasted paying public servants for doing bugger all. 40% of the working population works directly or indirectly for the State. Doubtless IHT and Business Rates don't impact you. You talk nonsense saying 'most of us accept them as a necessary evil'. Don't you read the papers? A recent You Gov survey said 80% of respondents were against IHT. High axes do not equate to government efficiency.
DeleteYes l read newspapers and daily l see their bias against the real interests of the majority of our citizens ( an excellent example being the majority vote for BREXIT - egged on by our biased media ).
DeleteYou mean the 'real interests' of non productive people like you who probably never need to worry about any taxes as you doubtless have some state job and no assets to tax. And, as a distraction in comes Brexit!
