GIVE WELLINGTON THE BOOT

When the Dame posted her lavender-scented 'notepaper' to the Duke of Wellington she thought he would have the courtesy to reply. Thinking nothing of the Dame and her social pretensions he just ignored her.

How rude!

The Duke recently resigned from the Tory Party in a sulk over Brexit: he's someone who takes himself very seriously and still rides furiously on the reputation of his ancestor.

So why did the Dame write? To try to wangle an invitation to Stratfield Saye? No, she wrote as below.

Anyway, the Duke is very self-important and declined to engage with a mere Dame.

He seems not to give a damn about sewage flooded basements homes; his only interest is to stop sewage being dumped into those trout streams on the Downs where he likes to fly fish.

Very laudable but how about helping those whose homes were flooded with rats and raw sewage?

As a hereditary peer in the Lords, he's a waste of space and makes one wonder whether hereditary, as well as life peers, are not in need of radical reform.

Doubtless, Wellington preferred chairing Rothmans whose products harm millions rather than coming to the assistance of humble people.

  1. Wellington is a very strange man. He is enthralled by his ancestor who fought at Waterloo 200 years ago and its time he got over it. He has this strange Office at his country house,Stratfield Saye. The desk (very old and cluttered) belonged to the Iron Duke. And the telephone is one of the old Bakelite models with a rotary dial. Black, of course. His PA works off the office in a secret room with a concealed doorway. All of this is carefully choreographed by this small and insignificant person who trades on his ancestry. A Director of St James Place, the Rothschild wealth management business,Chairman Jacob Rothschild loves to genuflect to his Duke at Board meetings. Its Jacob's way of cocking a snoop at his inferiors.

Wellington's son and large family also camp at the family pile. Have done for years. But young wifey recently bolted for it - the set up was just too stifling.

    Sad little crowd of mesomorphs

    1. 21:22 I must agree with you. The Duke, besides being a dear friend of mine and colleague in the Upper House, is a man of prodigious talents. I, too, have been a victim of this brutal blog so empathise with His Grace. We aristocrats need to maintain our values of fair play and decency.

  3. Wellington is a prat. But he cannot be mentioned in the same company as Moylan - they come from completely different backgrounds. One is the son of a Birmingham bus driver who was forced to leave Ireland. The Duke is, well, a Duke.

    Enough said

  4. When I was a young architect in 1972 I worked on Wellington Country park - this was the first 'Country Park', created by the then Duke out of some disused gravel pits at Stratfield Saye with the help of a substantial grant from the government, under the Countryside Act 1968. The present Duke, then Marquis of Duro, would waft through the site like Mr Grace in 'Are You Being Served'

And he's not a real Duke, is he, 1814 compared to say the Duke of Norfolk 1397?

    1. In fact, the Wellesley name was Wesley and they were modest Anglo Irish landed gentry. As 12.03 rightly says they are mere newcomers. It reminds one of the first Spencer getting up to speak in the 17c. Lord Arundell said,"My Lord Spencer would know nothing of these things for he was merely a sheep farmer in those days".
