A GOOD MOVE TO SLOW FAST MOVERS

For far too long irresponsible drivers have used our city streets in an obnoxious and selfish manner.

They endanger the lives of the vulnerable, create excessive noise and pollute our streets.

The Dame welcomes the introduction of this 20mph speed limit.

Why anyone needs a high-performance car in London is a great mystery of our times.

Well done, Cllr Thalassites

As you will know, over the last six months we have been doing all we can to protect lives and protect livelihoods during the Coronavirus pandemic. As the borough began to get moving again in the summer, we announced our Active Travel plan to help people to walk and cycle safely and attract shoppers and diners to some of our most famous streets again.

As part of this announcement we said we would join other parts of London in introducing a boroughwide 20mph speed limit. This follows a successful pilot scheme in St Helen’s and Dalgarno wards.

We will be introducing this new speed restriction from this week. Signage and road markings will begin to be unveiled at the border with Westminster and an experimental traffic order will be in place from 13 November.

Police will be able to enforce against speeding where signage is in place. Full implementation across the borough, including road markings will be complete in January 2021.

If a car hits a person at 30 miles per hour it is five times more likely to cause fatal injuries than it is at 20. I hope you will support this new measure, which will keep our borough safe for cyclists and pedestrians, while limiting environmental impact.

I know there has been an increase in congestion recently, which has been impacted by a number of roadworks and bridge closures. We are monitoring this closely and I would like to reassure you that we do not expect to see a further increase in congestion, journey times or emissions as a result of the new speed limit.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Johnny Thalassites

  1. 20MPH is nuts. Negates 150 years of progress. Its called reverse productivity. Cllr Thalassites needs to grow up and stop being in love with himself and his self indulgent mission

  2. It is a lie that there was a successful trial in St Helens and Dalgarno. It has made no difference to the speed of traffic. And the consultation is not even over yet.
