More evidence that it is time for Central Government to slash the grant to Kensington & Chelsea. There are other Councils who need the money desperately for essential and basic services for their residents. But mega rich K&C rubs everyone's nose in the dirt and makes a fool of the Borough with all this Opera, unidentified UFO's landing in Ladbroke Grove and half naked men writhing around on the floor of Leyton House for the excitement of the Leader, Cllr Paget-Brown
Local Government should stay out of business and entertainment. The skill set is building and maintaining a value proposition for resident needs ie good, low cost services. When public sector employees stray and start to dabble in business and entertainment they get taken for a ride by the Volpes and Investecs of this world.
I agree. Housing for the disabled is what is needed not opera for anyone...

Those are the words I want associated with RBKC not opera, people are dying whilst the monies I pay in tax to protect those whom cannot protect themselves are being spent on entertainment. I do not find people dying entertaining.

And the first meeting of the working group set up to clarify out how Opera Holland Park can become independent of the Council keeps being postponed. Perhaps the group is now in the long grass?
Officer has reported that Cllr Paget-Brown has quietly made it clear that whatever Council Tax is required to fund the frippery will be made available. Of course this will not be written down or stated at open meetings. But the cheques will keep being issued, the tent will be erected every year, Volpe (the ex Travel Agent with no artistic qualifications) will continue to be an "Opera Director", and the peacocks of Holland Park will continue to have their tranquillity shattered four months every year. Hail to the only Civic Opera in the British Isles
There was never any intention of making OHP independent. The Working Party was a Cockell mechanism to buy time so that he would not be confronted with a decision to stop funding opera with Council Tax
Paget-Brown may not have it all his own way as the word is that next year's Holland Park Opera is going to become a target of a group of protesters from the north of the Borough.. Shame that Verdi or Mozart wont sound quite the same with a backdrop of whistles, football rattles, cat-calls and chanting!
What a good idea! Make sure that it is a "First Night" because this is when Councillors like to use their free tickets and puff up with their guests who generally do not have the first clue why they are at the opera
North Kensington residents may decide to protest but they should bear in mind that K&C is stuffed with Tory voting genteel poor. These once grand citizens on their uppers need their dose of culture on the cheap and (lets face it) a shot on the doorstep is more manageable than a bus ride down the road to Covent Garden or a drive to Garsington. Paget-Brown knows his stuff and the diversion of a few million quid of Council Tax to buy some votes is good politics
