Christopher Booker has written an excellent article in today's Daily Mail Council waste on how councils like K&C fritter away taxpayers' hard earned wealth. It should be obligatory reading for every councillor and shame them into mending their ways: that is assuming that they have any shame.....
Striking is the fact that it matters not in the least the political hue of a council...Conservative councils-which one expects to be prudent, are as sinful as Labour and Lib Dem.......
Anyway....here is the link to an exceptionally good piece. And the comments are worth reading too.
Well done Mr Booker for lifting the lid on the illusion that this country is broke, it is not, it is badly managed yet again. It is irrevalent which party is in power because they are all run by the faceless Mr Humphries of the world and no one is in control.
ReplyDeleteBookers article clearly demonstrates this, Central Government say one thing and councils translate it to something else. An example of which is the 'bedroom tax' aka London Councils ability to socially cleanse the inner city of vulnerable groups. Central government give them millions to make sure homes that have been adapted to meet peoples needs are not affected where do councils declare that when they evict people?
Westminsters spend on CCTV cameras is another method of getting rid of the vast amount of monies gathered from their parking fines cauldron (They had a four million underspend last year).
Westminster and Kensington Councils are continually trying to find methods of cutting transport to vulnerable groups of people who cannot get to their day centre or club because of transport cuts, whilst these councils they sit on millions of pounds which cannot be used for anything else other than transport or upgrading roads. So why are central government giving these councils more money to do this work when they have millions already.
The fact is that none of them know what they are doing, so in this time of hardship and with the cry of "we are all in this together" any monies given to local councils should be ringfenced and targeted with reports of their tangible outcomes for local communities. Time and again they have demonstrated that they are corrupt and mismanaged. The only way to make sure that real impact for local communities actually happen is to tie the money down.

You have clearly missed the point and seem to have not actually read the near weekly reports by this blog of abuse of power, financial mismanagement and abuse, greed and egotistical projects. The responsibility for all of this sits at the feet of the people who run this council. They neglect vulnerable people, ignore residents and will hopefully feel it at the next election.
DeleteThis blog has time and again demonstrated that it is fair, it is simply interested in what local people think, want and should know. It has no agenda other than to let residents know what is being done in their name and with their money unlike the Royal Boroughs propaganda paper.

We should not forget that Prime Minister Sir Pooter Cockell is Chairman of the Local Govt Association. He is Leader of the whole putrid apparatus that squanders our money. He sets the tone. He sets the example. And what a record of splurging he has at Kensington and Chelsea.

We need more people with the common sense approach of Booker who can point out the profligate ways of the likes of Cockell and Moylan
ReplyDeleteFor too long, local Government has been out of sight and out of mind. Thick and greedy councillors have taken over and become obsessed with their importance and SRA's. "Average" professionals have shied away from the private sector and opted for higher salaries in Town Halls with feather bedded pensions and call themselves "Officers". The whole bandwagon has been growing in scope and ambition without any checks and balances. Until residents suddenly note that strange things are happening. Like spending £30 million of council tax to import pink granite from China to decorate Exhibition Road.

DeleteLabour used to ring-fence much of the money allocated to Councils; it was the Liberal Democrat/Conservative Coalition government that ended this sensible practice.

ReplyDeleteThe K&C Administration, flush with money, has certainly demonstrated total oblivion to the national financial crisis and has accelerated spending on vanity projects to an extraordinary degree. The idea of spending £30 million to refurbish Exhibition Rd in the middle of a severe recession shows a totally irresponsible behaviour
