There
are many elderly and not so elderly people living in our Royal
Borough. Often their only asset is a flat-or possibly small house,
purchased or left to them years ago. In the intervening years
inflation and overseas demand has pushed up the value of that asset,
whilst, at the same time, eating away at their smallish fixed income.
We
all know at least someone in the Borough in that position.
A
by product of Cameron's lust for power was being forced to work with some
unattractive and minimally qualified opportunists able to wangle
their way into power.
What a bunch! Ex National Parks PR man, Danny
Alexander running the Treasury and 'so so' economist and ballroom
dancing aficionado, 'Doc' Cable are just two that come to mind.

Cable has now come up with a ludicrous idea that will cause havoc to
the lives of many elderly cash and income poor Borough residents.
According
to Cable anyone with a property worth just over £2 million is 'super
rich' and should thus pay a mansion tax of 1%. If this man gets
his way it will mean that those who just cannot afford it will have
to find £20,000 a year...in addition to the tax they already
pay on their small fixed income.
The
Dame has many elderly neighbours terrified that they will have to
sell up their home of many treasured memories and move away.
The
Dame challenges the Lib Dem councillors to come into the open and oppose an idea that will impact most savagely on a
group of people far removed from Cable's stated target: the
investment banker,
This
is the moment when all Borough resident associations should come
together and collectively denounce this mad and ill thought through
idea.
Perhaps our very part time £130,000 a year Council Leader might give us his
view. But probably not because Cockell and Cable have one thing in common:they both live off the back of us taxpayers

ReplyDeleteIt is time for Caruana and her (small) crowd to speak out and tell it as it is. There are many elderly residents living on fixed incomes of ca £15k per year in £2 million apartments. Struggling to make ends meet and living longer and longer.
Has Cable got any idea of the suffering and distress that would be caused by a rate demand for an additional £20k?

ReplyDeleteCouncil tax is supposed to pay for civic amenities like dustbin clearance. It costs the same to clear a dustbin in North Kensington, S Kensington, and Liverpool. This is the politics of envy seeping out of the head of Vince.

If the Govt has to spread tax and raise more tax then the fair way is more VAT.

Dr Cable is a fair person but sometimes gets carried away when he is angry. It would help if K&C could make a contribution to the debate by publishing the facts. How many elderly people on fixed incomes live in £2m homes in the Borough? Even an estimate might help to wake people up

If the only problem with this scheme were that described in the "person with an income of £20k living in a £2 million apartment" then it would be easily fixed - cap the tax liability to 1% of the property value or 1% of income, whichever is greater. The hypothetical "person with an income of £20k living in a £2 million apartment" would then be faced with a tax bill for £200. Not exactly zero but not particularly onerous either.
ReplyDeleteSadly the "nefarious rich" would probably take advantage and declare that they too have little or no income ...
Which brings us to the real problem with this scheme: that it is little more than a band-aid for a tax system which clearly does not work properly and is allowing far too many to evade paying tax through particularly inventive "tax avoidance measures". Sadly it is very unlikely that any of our political masters, of any political persuasion, will be fixing it any time soon. They benefit from it themselves. And turkeys don't generally vote for Christmas.
Perhaps the current Liberal Councillors support the mansion tax? There cant be that large a number of 2 mill plus properties in those 2 wards. Might not lose them too many votes...but it certainly wouldnt help potential colleagues in any of the 13 Tory wards...
