Pathetic because it just encourages the subjects of his censorship to visit the site though other channels. But beyond all that is the patronising way he insults the intelligence of his colleagues.
Does he not think they have a right to read one of the fastest growing blogs in K&C?
Councillors already find all negative references to Cockell deleted from the weekly press distribution digest: now they are blocked from an important source of residents' views.
Let us hope that the Leader of the Minority Group will raise the matter at the next Council meeting. And let us also hope that she will get all party support because censorship crosses political boundaries.
What is particularly sickening about the affair is this. Cockell's family fled Germany before the war to escape persecution. If anyone should value freedom of expression it should be him.

ReplyDeleteStories of the Town Hall censoring the Hornet persist on this blog. It is hard to believe in this day and age, and in a democracy, that such practices are possible by democratically elected representatives. Something has gone badly wrong

ReplyDeleteA long time ago may be Sir Merrick had good intentions but like most politicians (not all though) has proved to be an utter failure.
ReplyDeleteI consider the actions by Sir Merrick as none other than misguided and utterly pathetic. If someone wishes to read the Hornet they will do one way or another. Sir Merrick is clearly insecure and has a complex after all the Hornet if pretty harmless.

ReplyDeleteOne hesitates to disagree with The Dame, but have to say that many aspects of Pooter are appalling. The attempt to censor The Dame is proof positive that he and his cronies fear The Hornet. They are right to do so. She is spoken of with respect throughout the Rotten Borough. It's more than can be said for Pooter.

ReplyDeleteI think, on this occasion, what's being blocked by the council's over zealous web nanny software is only the banner for some reason (?). Seems pretty harmless. There was a period of time when council PCs were prevented from accessing posters' comments but it doesn't seem to be the case now.

Is there any need or possibility to spell things out more clearly? This is an insecure and failed human being who is in a position to abuse power and exercises censorship in a democracy. And the democratic check and balance, his fellow Conservative Councillors, is in a deep and collective coma and therefore incapable of exercising its duty to remove him

All Councils have external net management software principally designed to stop Council Officers wasting time reading The Sun, playing online games or watching porn etc on the Council's time.
ReplyDeleteIn order for this allegation by the Dame to have any real legs, in terms of pinning the blame on Cockell and showing unacceptable censorship at work in RBKC, then there would need to be some proof that this blocking of The Hornet is not just a part of that process.

DeleteWell,what a pity the net management had not the capacity to stop Cllr Cockell's great friend and ally, ex Cllr Barry Phelps sending out obscene images of very young boys to his friends and other councillors on the RBKC server. Care to answer that?
Perhaps the current over zealous application of the net management software is as a direct result of ex Cllr Phelps' misuse of Council IT.

Delete15.44 you can attempt to ratioanlise anything that you like. But free speech in a democratic system is the cornerstone of democracy. And the Hornet is a dedicated blog whose purpose is to expose wrongdoing in the corrupted administration of K&C which is the result of a fourteen year dictatorship by one man.
