KWARTENG? UNI LECTURER MATERIAL....

A few years ago the Dame met Kwasi Kwarteng at a Kensington drinks party. At the time he was sort of interning at Crispin Odey.

He is someone of high academic intelligence, charm and humour. The sort of chap you want to sit next to at a dinner party.

But the big question is this...is he the man to hold a high office of state?

Ken Clarke was one of the best chancellors this country has had.

By background, he was a rather run-of-the-mill criminal barrister practicing in Brum and the Midlands. With none of the academic distinctions of Kwarteng, it begs the question as to whether academics are the right people to run an economy?

Clarke would never have put his political foot in it the way this chancellor has.

Clarke was talking about Johnson here but it would apply, in part, to Kwarteng.

"He’s delightful company, very entertaining with a big personality, and he is highly intelligent, but he has a temperament that makes him unsuitable for political office."

  1. Tory economics of loony bin.6 October 2022 at 12:23

    Dear Dame,

I beg leave to disagree. Kenneth Clarke was clearly intelligent. But it was not very bright of him to decide, in his last budget, to reduce income tax by one penny in the pound from 21 pence to 20 pence. He stated that he needed the receipts from the privatisation of Railtrack to put this measure in place. In the first year of Rail Privatisation it cost the Excheqeur £1 billion more to operate a privatised and franchised railway than it did un British Rail. Economics of the loony bin.

Kwarteng, like rees Mogg and now it seems Truss, are disciples of Hayeck. I think Liz will be Trussed up like a chicken and given the order of the boot

  2. Someone who knows him said, "I would not trust him to run a corner shop"

    1. He'd think that a corner shopkeeper not paying his bills on time would stimulate growth.

  3. Emma Dent Coad once said that Rebecca Long Bailey MP "knows a lot about economics." If that is Emma's assessment, she would do well to invest in Economics Made Simple.

    1. " Long Bailey knows a lot about econ? " Sounds like EDC is economically illiterate. Does Lari understand Economics? Does he have a degree?

    2. With that expensive education at St Pauls , of course Lari has a degree . From prestigious Imperial College . Nobody should doubt Lari's intelligence - that's not the problem . It's his total lack of human understanding that makes him such a menace. Born with multiple 'silver spoons' which makes him totally unable to get to grips with the needs of Golborne or North Kensington.

    3. As Lari is educationally better than Dent Coad, perhaps Kensington CLP will choose him as the next prospective parliamentary candidate? If he did Maths or a Science at Imperial, he will probably have some understanding of economics. Cannot remove the taint of homophobia - shame.

  4. Kwarteng is another Eton boy who needs to impress his peer group by doing things like lunching with the King, being an Investment Banker and becoming Finance Minister. Nothing wrong with this so long as he has the skills and wisdom to do a good job. Remember Cameron and Johnson? Both cut from the same imposter cloth.

Kwarteng does not seem to have an ounce of political judgement. What he does love doing is adrenaline rush debriefs with his City mates after "fiscal event" bungs. What a liability to Truss, the Tories, the Party, the country and the world. Knowing how to pass exams, write poetry and waddle in Windsor is not what 2022 is about.

Time for this gent to move on and find an academic post at a minor university. Where he can do lots of ego tripping with second rate students.

  7. The most worrying aspect of this whole episode is that Truss chose Kwarteng to take the high Office of Finance Minister. A terrible error of judgement. A Finance Minster who bombed twice in his first 10 days in Office. Failure to understand the political impact of his 45p tax cut and failure to understand the City with his ill thought through "fiscal event". Could it be that Truss was having an Amber moment? Truss, after all, has been known to stray the marital bed.
